Some of the best meals happen in the least expected places. Deep in the Coquet Valley, in a village so small you could walk through it in two minutes, there's a 200-year-old pub doing things that would turn heads in any city.

The Star Inn, Harbottle

The Star Inn sits on the main street of Harbottle, a quiet hamlet tucked into the Northumberland National Park, about ten miles west of Rothbury. The ruins of the 12th-century Harbottle Castle look down over the pub garden, and on clear nights the skies above belong to the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park. It is not the sort of place you stumble across by accident, which is exactly the point.

Phil and Karen Wilkinson bought the freehold in 2019, having fallen in love with the area after returning to the North East from years in Peterborough. They stripped the place back during lockdown, uncovering layers of history beneath old plaster and floorboards, and rebuilt it with real care. The coaching inn was originally constructed from sandstone salvaged from Harbottle Castle itself, and that sense of deep-rooted character still runs through every stone wall and low beam.

The standout surprise is Pizzeria La Stella, a wood-fired pizza kitchen set up in a converted outbuilding in the courtyard. The pizzas are hand-stretched in the traditional Italian way and cooked in a proper wood-fired oven. Reviewers have called them genuinely comparable to what you would find in Italy. Beyond pizza, the menu stretches to pasta, risotto, fish specials, and pub classics. Mains run roughly between eight and twenty pounds a head, which feels like a steal given the quality.

At the bar, you will find cask ales from Northumberland breweries, including First and Last Brewery and Muckle Brewing. The pub even had its own celebratory pale ale, Star 225, brewed for its 225th birthday.

The Star Inn holds a 4.8-star rating on Google. On TripAdvisor it has 88 reviews at 4.8 out of 5. On Booking.com, guests rate it 9.4. For a pub in a village of around 260 people, that is remarkable consistency.

Food is served daily from noon until 8:30pm. Booking is wise, especially for weekends and the pizzeria in summer. The pub is dog-friendly throughout and doubles as the village shop, newsagent, and National Park information point. There is parking outside. The address is Harbottle, Morpeth, Northumberland, NE65 7DG. You can reach them on 01669 650221 or visit thestarinnharbottle.co.uk.

If you are walking the Coquet Valley, cycling through the national park, or simply looking for an excuse to drive into some of England's emptiest countryside, The Star Inn is the kind of place that makes the journey worthwhile.
